🇲🇹 Term & School Year

Term and school year in Malta

Malta is the surprise destination: British-style education, Mediterranean sun, English as an official language and a small, safe island where everything is close by.

English with a Mediterranean accent

Malta is Europe, Mediterranean and English-speaking — a combination no other destination offers. Flights from Spain are short and cheap, there’s no time difference, and the whole island feels like one big neighbourhood.

International and private schools follow British curricula or the International Baccalaureate, with international staff and students from dozens of countries: full English immersion in a softer, more familiar setting than a big northern boarding school.

The year in Malta

Your child can live with an English-speaking host family — my recommended formula for immersion — or in residence, depending on the school. Daily life is school in the morning, sport and activities in the afternoon, and weekends of sea, history and outdoor plans almost all year round.

Many families discover Malta through a summer camp and come back for a term or a full year. Others compare it with Ireland and choose based on their child’s character — which is exactly what I’m here for.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is education in Malta really in English?

Yes. English is an official language and teaching at international and private schools is entirely in English, following British-tradition systems and exams (IGCSE, A-Levels or IB depending on the school).

Which student profile suits Malta best?

Students who want English immersion in a warmer, closer environment: a first year abroad, younger ages, or families who want to visit with a cheap weekend flight. Also those seeking an IB international school without UK boarding costs.

What paperwork is needed?

Malta is EU: no visa needed — just ID/passport, the European health card and minor authorisations. We handle enrolment and accommodation together.

Aren't there too many Spanish speakers in Malta?

In summer, yes — but the school year is a different story: international schools apply nationality quotas and the atmosphere is genuinely international. I still check it school by school.

Is the Maltese year recognised at home?

Yes: as an EU country with a recognised system, validation follows the standard procedure. We plan subjects at enrolment to keep it simple.
